First Semester DONE

Well, I have lived through my first semester as a working adult and it was just as fun as I expected it to be. I really loved the college experience- class discussions and writing assignments and meeting new people. I actually felt a touch of sadness on the last day of classes- that was it, I wouldn't be seeing those people again! I got my first newspaper article published after submitting an essay I wrote in English, that felt good, and I got a 4.0 GPA which also feels good! It was less exhausting than I expected, I often found that at the end of a work day I'd feel drained, but going to class energized me ( a relief from the boredom of work I guess!)

The only downside I can think of is how much time it takes up. It is a relief to have my evenings back for winter break! I almost don't know what to do with all the spare time!

This upcoming semester I'm going to increase my credit load to 9 credits (from the 6 I did for my first one) and see how it feels. I'm being cautious, I don't want to over commit and then be stressed out by too much work and school and hate college! The extra class I'm taking I decided to take online though, I think it is the smartest decision. That way I will have more flexibility and not feel like ALL my evenings are taken up with school. Maybe I can even do some homework at work, during my downtime.

I will let you know what online classes are like. I didn't choose to do them ALL online, as I like the interaction in class. I am also a bit worried about how much more boring it could be online....anyway....wishing you all a safe and happy holiday!

What its like..........

Well, with a few weeks of college under my belt let me share my experiances......

1. As an adult going straight from work to school, you can feel a leeeeetle overdressed in class in a suit lol...

not your average college outfit lol...

2. Sometimes you will revert to your high school habit of doodling to pass the time in a boring lecture as they are tailored to 18 year olds with little life experiance.... and you probably will know about most of what the professor going on about....but often its just the first half where the professor is stating the obvious preliminaries and then it gets interesting with interactive discussions etc.

And no matter what- class is more interesting than work....

3. Writing essays/speeches really does help get your brain going again and you will suprise yourself with your own knowledge of interesting topics that even professors only know a little bit about and they will often ask you questions.....I found myself explaing the 'Blue Zones' to the professor yesterday as she brought it up in class but couldnt elaborate on it, and I was the only one who raised my hand when she asked ' has anyone heard of this?' That is what being bored at work and going on wikipedia/msn/NY Times does for you....

4. You will also be more up to date on news and current affairs than anyone else in your class beside your professor, thanks to water cooler gossip at work which does come in handy in several classes

5. If you time things well, you can polish off your essays etc at work and free up your weekends

Just DO it

I prepared, I studied (with a bit less time than I planned as college registration dates snuck up on me!) and I PASSED the entry test into my college- I'm IN, enrolled and going to school this Fall. I can't believe it, finally, as an adult I will be able to fulfill my dreams of earning a degree!

The basic math review is very helpful- work through the problems, it will prepare you thoroughly!

I passed my math so well they wanted me to 'challenge' my score and try get 8 more answers right to be placed into an even higher level math class (ummmm...no thanks, quite comfortable with starting with the first class!)

Update!

Things are coming together- I've sent in all my admission info to the college I would like to attend, recieved my financial aide report. At the moment I'm studying to pass the entrance exam- its not the hardest thing in the world and the English etc will be a breeze- but the math is what I'm reviewing!

I've found that it comes back to me very quickly- but funnily enough its little things like long division with decimals that I find myself looking up! I've forgotten how to do things that I've been doing on a calculator for years! Once again - simply reading over how to do it brings it right back,which is great!! Nothing like the strain of learning it when 10 years old and called up to the board by a glowering teacher ;)

The book I'm working through is 'Algebra- Structure and Method- Book 1 by McDougal,Littell' As I work through the problems I also watch the videos on THE BEST TUTORING WEBSITE EVER

I have a tight deadline of June, July to get this done though- I need to do the CPT test by August to enroll for Fall!!! I would say wish me luck- but its not luck I need as much as self discipline! Starting today I'm going to write down my goals health and education wise and read them out to myself daily to keep me on task! No more procrastination or time wasting (ok, maybe just a leetle bit of time wasting on facebook but not hours and hours...)

Update on my Back to School progress-

 I have not made the time to sit down and study ONE page of math yet! And I need to do it on my own as all Prep classes offered nearby are during work hours (wow- isn't THAT conveniant for us workers??)

I feel like I havent really had ANY time to just sit still for an hour- my days are a blur

... minimal sleep, work and upheaval at work, cooking, rushing out the door to the gym, leisure classes, walking the dog, cleaning the house, grocery shopping, de-stressing in the bathtub or squeezing in an hour here and there with my man when HE isnt at school! Most days it is hard to just find the time to get THAT done what to speak of algebra...So for the benefit of me (and maybe you too!) here is a helpful list of ways to find more time in the day! Ideally I'd be rich enough to cut back on work hours but this will have to do for now...!

1. Manage Yourself


Manage yourself by changing your perception. It is less about managing time and more about managing yourself - a far more empowering proposition. Everyday at any given moment you have a choice to make. Things you can exercise control over include interruptions, time wasters,(for me-this would be relaxing by watching TV/going online- less 'relax' time and more study is needed!!) procrastination, and perfectionism. (for me- I need to realize that I dont need to alot whole hour long chunks of time to study- 15 minutes here or there will do if that is really all the time I have!!) More on these below. Manage your choices well and you will have more time.



2. Prioritize

This cannot be emphasized enough. In his book, "The Seven Habits of Highly Successful People," Stephen Covey makes the distinction between what is important and urgent versus what is important and not urgent. "Important and Urgent" specifies what you have to do today. Immediately. "Important and Not Urgent" falls into the category of longer term planning. In a third category he describes what is "Urgent and Not Important." It is here where some of your biggest time wasters hang out. A ringing phone is typically urgent and important only if you are a receptionist or switchboard operator. This leads us to the next tip.



3. Make Friends with Your Phone and Email

Manage interruptions. Do not answer the phone. Really, unless answering the phone is in your job description. Pinpoint several times during the day when you will check voice mail and email. Inform colleagues, friends, and family about your new system. Establish a plan for urgent or time sensitive communications.



4. Develop a Tracking System - And Use It

Don't carry your "to do" list around in your head. Write it down and carry over what you did not get done to the next day. Use a calendar or other type of tracking system. I like electronic systems that allow you to transfer information easily. Pen and paper work too.



5. Keep a Strategic To-Do List

Become a strategic planner and establish your "Important and Not Urgent" to do's. These are the plans that usually fall prey to those loud and pesky "Urgent and Not Important" distractions. Break down these future-driven intentions into short-term and "mini" short-term plans. Schedule those milestones as well. A spreadsheet is an excellent tool for this.



6. Lose the Perfectionism

One of the biggest time eaters, perfectionism can cause you to stay too long on a project that does not really warrant that kind of attention. Or maybe it causes you to do everything yourself rather than delegate or ask for help. Concerns of something not being done perfectly can also lead to another time waster -- procrastination. While a job well done is very satisfying, if you find yourself burning the midnight oil, having no life, or ignoring certain projects, ask yourself this: "Considering the criteria of this project, is this good enough, could I delegate this, am I avoiding something?"



7. Ask for Input

Sometimes you simply need help prioritizing. Too many projects, too little time? Ask your supervisor or a colleague for assistance here. Do not carry the burden of this one alone.



8. Say "No" - Politely

Still overwhelmed? Have way too much to do? Learn to say no -- politely. Or if your schedule permits, offer alternatives. "I would like to help you and this is what I am currently working on for this week. I will be in a better place to help you next week -- will that work?" -- for example. Gain respect from colleagues and friends by appropriately communicating your limits.



9. Leave Early

Leave ten minutes early for appointments. This means resisting making that last minute phone call or sending that non-time sensitive email that inevitably takes more time than you think. When you give yourself this wiggle room, you eliminate rushing and arrive with time to orient yourself to the task at hand.



10. Play the Waiting Game

Waiting in the reception room? Standing in line? Use this time to your advantage. Make a phone call, read the newspaper or even take a few moments to breathe and reflect upon your day.

Time management can be accomplished by planning, prioritizing, and organizing your activities.

I will commit to actually carrying out the above! I still dont feel like there are enough hours in the day to get everything done that needs to be done but hopefully by consciously paying attention to my time management I get more out of my day!

What are my priorites?

Health (working out and cooking light!), my man and puppy (spending time with them both), my future (Education- starting with my math book to get past the college admission test!)

Plan- fit as much of these three things into each evening as possible!

For a start- tonight's plan- ( I know, I know..not exactly interesting reading but its going to help me out)

WAS going to go see John Legend give a talk- buuut I dont have time- so -

5-6- Commute home from work - perhaps manage to stop and grab some much needed groceries?

6-7:30 - Cook dinner, lunch for tomorrow and clean

7:30-8- Get to the gym

8:00-9:00 Work out

9:30-10:0- Actually crack open a text book on Math, have a look, maybe even solve a problem :)

10:00 - My man gets home from his exam! Spend time with him and get ready for bed by 11 so I can get up at 6:30am...

Leisure Course- Update

So you will remember that I signed up for two leisure classes at the University of Florida. Last night I went to my first class, Home Bartending. It was quite the experiance!

I arrived at the Reitz Union with plenty of time to spare before class- thank God - because the area I thought I would be parking in was FULL so I had to drive around campus and find a spot! (welcome to campus life!!)

As I walked back to the Reitz, I was suprised by the butterflies I had in my stomach and thought 'at leat this isnt a 'credit' class, or I would probably be even more nervous!' I found my classroom and took a seat, while our instructor ate sushi. It was a very informal class and I met new people and had a lot of fun that night tasting about 50 different types of beer!

I also felt inspired being surrounded by college students- if they could pass the CPT and get in so can I! It helped put me more in the mindset of actually believing I can go to college =)
